I suspect that back when the NYTimes went "Select", cutting off Krugman and Frank Rich was the feature, not the bug; they were a unique thorn in the side of the Bush Administration, at a time when the NYTimes was using its news sections to promote the Bush agenda (cf. Judith Miller, etc.)
Now that Bush and his party are out of the picture, whatever deals were cut, formally or informally, with Sulzburger are now doubtless null and void.
